How does this relate to the Author?
Having had my friends commit suicide and experience and know how it feels for my loved one to self-harm & have mental illness. I have a desire to erase the stigma of mental illness. People are can sometimes be quite ignorant as I was before, but the most stigma that I can say that makes me tick is that when people call people with mental illness, “crazy” or “psycho” or “…with special needs.” The correct term is people with mental illness. Please be careful in how you say it and in what context, because most likely they know someone or they have mental illness themselves.
Questions that people ask about mental illness:
What happens in the physical body? The brain in science terms.
“Everything we do relies on neurons communicating with one another. Electrical impulses and chemical signals carrying messages across different parts of the brain and between the brain and the rest of the nervous system. Neurotransmitters send chemical messages between neurons. Mental illnesses, such as depression, can occur when this process does not work correctly. Communication between neurons can also be electrical, such as in areas of the brain that control movement. When electrical signals are abnormal, they can cause tremors or symptoms found in Parkinson’s disease.” – NIMH ( National Institute of Mental Health, 2017)
Basically there is an imbalance in the brain chemicals such as Serotonin, Dopamine and Glutamate which is important for mood, appetite, sleep, thought and emotion and much more.
Prefrontal cortex (PFC)—Seat of the brain’s executive functions, such as judgment, decision making, and problem solving.
The brain is the most sensitive and crucial organ of all. Many experts believe that the brain does not fully develop until the age of 25. The brain is still developing from birth till it fully develops, so what does that mean in terms of the development of a child’s brain?
It is critical that a child’s development is holistically developed which means the child should have a sense of well-being, belonging, engagement and expression.
What is the effects of stress on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of the brain?
“Research has found that high levels of catecholamine release during stress rapidly impair the top-down cognitive functions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC)” – (ScienceDirect, 2017) Basically, when the brain is in a stressful situation, it transmits a signal to the brain that makes the prefrontal cortex(reasoning part of the brain) difficult to function.
How does this relate to You?
An example in real life situation is when you have lost someone you love, they died. So many employees go on a leave of absence because they cannot function and concentrate at work. They are stressed and their prefrontal cortex is being impaired and cannot function properly. Imagine having to go through that same stress over a period of time, a divorce, an unemployment, a break-up, lost a friend, or moving to a new place. That takes a toll in your mental health so please seek help from your parents, friends and/or siblings. You are not alone. Please seek help and talk to someone.
